Gordon Murray is the founder of Murray International Language Centre (MiLC). He is a local from Stornoway, Isle of Lewis. After working at various financial institutions in Edinburgh such as Scottish Equitable , Bankers Trust and Deutsche Bank, he decided to switch careers into English Language teaching.
He did a CertTESOL at Regents Edinburgh and then went out to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to work at Erican Language Centre. After three years, he decided to open a language centre in his hometown of Stornoway, capital of the Hebrides.
The centre welcomed its first student in January 2009 and has been welcoming students from all over the world ever since.
As well as running the centre Gordon is a member of:
- Scottish-China Association
- Scotland-Russia Forum
- Cross Parliamentary Group for China in the Scottish Government
He does work for the Lews Castle College and also youth work in the Hebrides.
He was a member of the Hebridean delegation that visitied Hefei 168 Middle School, Anhui province of China along with the Nicolson Institute and the Lews Castle College to promote links between the Hebrides and Hefei.
He has also been a member of a trade mission delegation to Shanghai, China with the Scottish Council for Development and Industry (SCDI).
He was selected to participate in the British Council LICD programme and recently returned from a trip to Tunisia promoting cultural awareness and knowledge share with Tunisian particpants of the programme.
He enjoys learning languages and is currently learning Arabic, German, Polish, Russian, Malay, Thai, Mandarin, Iban, French.
He is also a supporter of Scottish Gaelic learning and is keen to promote the language. MiLC produced, in partnership with Proiseact nan Ealan - The Gaelic Arts Agency, the first ever Gaelic karaoke DVD "Seinn Thu Fhein" in a bid to open Gaelic music to a wider audience.
