English for Personal Development

The English for Personal Development course follows a coursebook in the morning which introduces and practices all aspects of the English language. Each day will have an afternoon session on the following skills:

Speaking and Pronunciation (Phonetics)

This session will deal with the pronunciation of the sounds of the English language and how sentences merge together in a natural way for a native speaker.

Reading and writing

The student will be introduced to basic reading skills and then onto reading for the GIST or general reading with a wealth of selection. Students will be actively involved in reading clubs and projects centred around certain classic books. The writing component will be closely linked to the reading part and the student will be asked to write letters and the common skills of writing such as narratives, descriptive writing, letter writing.

Speaking and listening

The student will be exposed to listening techniques and how to respond to tones, stresses on words and sentences. They will be able to respond and be tested on listening skills.

Grammar

Important rules of grammar will be taught and grasped by exercises and different activities. Grammar learnt in the morning sessions will also be emphasised and reinforced, understood when to use it.

Conversation

This will be a rounding up of all lessons of the week and a topic of conversation will be used to practice all the skills used with conversation between all students and the teacher in a number of fun conversational activities.

Each session takes two hours and is a great way of practicing the skills learnt during the week.

From 4-5pm there is an optional tutorial where students can stay behind and ask the teacher any questions or discuss any difficulties they have encountered.

Each term lasts two calendar months and the student will be assessed throughout the two months with a test on the second last day of the term.

The student will be marked on afternoon work and the test to determine if they can be promoted to the next level. The pass rate is 70% and this needs to be obtained in all subjects and the test to be promoted.

The student will graduate if the decide to stay on and pass the advanced class.
